Outdoor dining in St. Louis is always a challenge. Trueman's circumvents this issue well with a semi-shaded outdoor patio fit with big screen TVs and a sand volleyball pit. The food itself is about average but has unique tastes from their sauces. My burger was slightly overcooked and on the smaller side. If you are looking for a place to hang out outside, drink cheap beer, and watch a Cardinals game, Trueman's is the place for you.

I live in Benton park and I love staying in the neighborhood. I am not a drinker so I never thought to go to Trueman's. Someone mentioned they have food and I had to check it out. I have been twice now and both times were great! They have salads, pizza, chicken wings and lots of tasty appetizers. I love the buffalo shrimp!

Waited and drank at this bar while waiting for the average across the street place. I enjoyed my time here, comfortable seats and cool staff.

My only beef is that they advertise as a soulard bar when they are clearly located in Benton Park neighborhood. A bit more fratty of a crowd than others in benton park but a fun time. Volleyball courts, good price on drafts. I have not tried the food. A good place to watch a sports game. Try it out

Its bar food... calm down folks. Its pretty good bar food. The fries, well I like them. So I will continue to walk here. I prefer to sit outside. But you won't catch me in tiny quarters during the weekend nights. Im.not cool enough for it then

What can I say about Trueman's place? This is really just a fantastic neighborhood sports bar and hangout. I could say more and go on about the food, the drink specials, or the shuttle to the games. Bottom line, if you are in Soulard and you're looking for a sports bar....look no further.

Here's the situation: a friend and I had just finished up a run, and we were SUPER hungry. The only problem? It was 11:30pm. On a Wednesday. When our beloved City Diner was closed, I checked Yelp to see if any other places nearby served food late. After a few failed calls to other local establishments, I tried Trueman's. I found out that their late-night menu (appetizers and pizza) was available until 1am. We've found a winner, folks! Trueman's is in the Benton Park area, across from Niche. It had the charm of a dive bar without the filth. It's not like we would have cared; we were already pretty disgusting from running 5+ miles in 90 degree weather. Anyway, we walked in, grabbed a seat, and our waitress (who was also working as the bartender) quickly came over and gave us menus. The appetizer menu was surprisingly big; they have everything from toasted ravs and fried green beans to chicken wings and potato skins, and just about everything in between. I settled with chicken nachos (made with housemade chips!) and housemade pretzel bites with cheese. My friend ordered a supreme pizza. Everything came out relatively quickly, and everything was GOOD. I don't know if it was because we were super hungry, but the food was a lot better than what I was expecting. The nachos were a GENEROUS portion, and the pretzel bites tasted fresh and delicious. I didn't try my friend's pizza (I had too much food to tackle on my own!), but he demolished over half of his 14" pizza. That's saying a lot right there. Service was friendly, and even though the music was WAY too loud, everything else about this experience was positive enough that I would come back.

Praise be to Trueman's for being open late on Sundays! When we first moved to Saint Louis, with an empty fridge and open stomachs, we needed some late night grub. It was about 9:45 and every place we called was either already closed or closing at 10, and we didn't want to be 'those people' who show up 2 minutes before close and order food (and you shouldn't be 'that person' either!) They said their kitchen would be open until 11 so we trekked on over! Our group of 5 split a large pizza, 20 wings, an order of baked ravioli and buffalo shrimp. It was traditional St. Louisian style pizza with the cracker crust and provel cheese. The spicy barbecue wing sauce is killer, and definitely something I would go back for on the regular. And I'm sure they do this at other restaurants, but my eyes have been opened to buffalo shrimp, and let me tell you - I'm a believer! Fried shrimp tossed in buffalo sauce. Nothing crazy but such a great idea! I'll be sure to check it out on other menus for sure. Also, they have the Sunday ticket for the NFL, so we were able to watch the Browns game earlier that day. All in all, a nice little bar in historic Soulard!

An entertaining bar with good drink specials. A huge perk is the free sports shuttle for Blues, Rams, and Cards games. A solid crowd with a variety of personality types due to the people brought in through the volleyball league. I was extremely disppointed when during a Cardinals game, 2/3 of the televisions in the bar were changed to music videos. I had to actively search for a manager to request (for me personally and the majority of the bar) to turn the Cardinals game back on. My request was denied to the dismay of my fellow St. Louis-ans and I. In conclusion, Trueman's is a fun bar, but should be ashamed to call themselves a sports bar.

I can't bury Trueman's Place because: 1) We didn't eat anything 2) We didn't sit outside (it's March 26 and it's effing snowing!) So with that in mind, here's what the beautiful wife and I experienced today: 1) They have keno, so if you like to gamble, you're in luck 2) They allow smoking. Though "as of March 15, cigars are allowed on the patio only." So you can have 100 people smoking Camels, but somebody lights up a Cohiba and it's a disaster? Lame. 3) The draft list is boring. Best offering was Goose Island's 312. I actually wished for some Schlafly offerings. 4) The beautiful wife got a giant vodka and soda. Her pint glass was more filled than my beer. That's not a bad thing. 5) The bartender/waitress never made another attempt to visit our table after the initial order. If we're supposed to grab more at the bar, great, just tell us. We'll be back to check out the patio when it is warm. I hope they have buckets or pitchers, because I'm skeptical of service at this point.

I love living in the City of St. Louis. I have never been so disappointed by the owner of a place that won't listen to a good customer. I will tell you of 90 other places to enjoy a good meal without having to listen to the owner Jim stand up for bad service, poor food! Dr. P

Great dive bar. Food is good for bar food. They have a DJ Thursday to Saturday night and music is ridiculously loud! Other than that it's a great place to grab drinks or a quick bite.

It's my neighborhood go to spot, especially for dinner and happy hour. They have some wonderful pizza. All the waitresses are very friendly and remember you (just like CHEERS).

This place has that familiar Soulard wet basement smell. There are two rooms and then a large patio. The rooms have zero ambiance but they do have plenty of TV's to watch the game. We ordered a fish basket and a fish special (Jesus told us too). The fish basket sucked. Three skimpy little pieces of cod. The fish special was better, but still I think the portions are small. Drinks were ok. Service was good.

  • Cody H.

It's a cool place for watching a game, any game, sheesh they got enough TV's! Decent size patio area, that's tented up for winter, with a 55 or so inch television. Drinks, are typical price.. haven't had the food there yet. Sand volleyball (one court). Bathroom needs different floor, other than the pee soaked one you tend to sink into... pretty gross, they lose a star for that.

I really want to like Trueman's Place. Soulard has its high points and low points, depeding upon what patrons are looking for. I like the relaxed atmosphere with live music and food similar to what you might experience in the Big Easy. The other side of Soulard appeals to the "Bro Man," the guy looking to meet girls and get a little crazy. Trueman's might appeal to this character. The menu is extensive, so one should hope for good advice from the waitress. When raised this question, I could tell our server hadn't been pushed too much for suggestions, but she was still helpful to the best of her abilities. She gave me some options, and I wish that I took her up on one of them. My wife got a buffalo chicken sandwich, kind of a safe zone for her. Meanwhile, she convinced me to get the NY Strip Steak Sandwich, which truly set up this place for failure. I order my steak medium rare, and it arrived closer to medium well/well done. Ultimately, the sandwich was enjoyable, and my wife had no beef with her chicken sandwich. However, Trueman's was clearly not our scene. Despite that, I am willing to give it another try. Stay tuned.

Trueman's is located on Sidney on the Benton Park/Soulard cusp. It is a fairly a busy neighborhood bar in the middle of the historic district. Inside it is old school wood trimmed, fairly dark, lots of neon. They have an outdoor patio and a volleyball court. It is always bustling with volleyball leagues in the warm weather months and it is generally frequented by young adults and their dogs (pets are outside only). Drinks are cheap and buckets of beer are popular here, The bar food is freezer to fryer. Nothing special, except if you compare it to the average dive bar. They actually have salads and food besides Tom's pizza and it is reasonably priced. The fried green beans aren't bad for bar food. Overall, the patio is what keeps this place hopping. Sunday funday can be a hoot and they do have security.

Good place to go to have a beer as long as you sit on the patio because the music is so loud inside. Lots of TVs so fantastic place to watch a game. Food is just ok-menu is too big, they should focus on few items and make them great. Service is good but without my favorite server Ally-I will probably just walk down to Big Daddy's.

Food is decent and the drinks are a lil more expensive then what they should be considering the atmosphere... But all round fun bar... They only hire what some would consider "attractive" women but to be honest so of these girls are just down right bad at their job. Slow service... But a good place for bar food!!

  • Margaret L.

This place is good in terms of bars that also serve food... but I wouldn't go here to eat expecting greatness. I think this might be a fun little place to drink, but when I popped in here for lunch with a few colleagues, my foodie dreams were all pushed aside as I perused the menu in search of something that wasn't deep fried. I ended up ordering the veggie burger, side of fries. The fries were dangerously good, and the veggie burger was totally acceptable, albeit something out of a box in their freezer. Service was great. I guess my point is that you could definitely eat here and enjoy the food if you're already here to drink, but I wouldn't go out of the way unless you want straight-up bar food.

Seemed like a cool place to hang out and drinks were decent. Food was pretty bad and service was horrible. No one at table finished their meals and we went to eat elsewhere soon after.

My experience here was more like a 2, but I am going to be objective and rate it a 3 because the truth is that this place is just too young of a crowd and scene for me personally. Ten years ago, I think I would have enjoyed it much more. I went with the BF after a fun day playing like kids at Swing Around Fun Town. We live in Benton Park and have been meaning to make it in to Trueman's for some time. We could have walked, but drove straight from Swing Around, and found decent parking on the street. We walked in through the back patio, packed with Cardinals fans and groups watching/participating in sand volleyball. The volleyball court is definitely a niche for Trueman's, and I like that it includes some fun and healthy physical activity! We drive or walk the dogs past pretty regularly, and the sand court is consistently in use. We went inside and parked at the bar. The music was SO loud it was hard to talk and order. Mostly hard rock and hip hop, occasionally with a merciful break to hear what was going on in the Cards game. On top of that there was a group of about 12 guys that had been drinking all day, competing to be heard over the music with tales of their youthful exploits. Lots of cussing and graphic stories ensued- doesn't bother me, but this in not a good place to bring the kids in any way. The bartenders are cute young girls dressing the part, definitely a good fit for the demographic. We stuck with beer, and I got the buffalo nachos on their house made chips. Most of the ingredients were just so so, but the house made chips were outstanding. I would order them as a snack on their own or buy a bag to go, a la Billy Goat. BF had a garden salad that was large but unremarkable with iceberg and romaine, shredded cheese, croutons, and out-of-a-bottle dressing. His quesadilla was equally average, with sour cream and salsa out of a jar on the side. Prices are decent, but certainly not a bargain. The space itself is very nice- clean, well decorated, lots of space, plenty of TVs. As I said, I could see myself here years ago drinking away a Sunday as I so frequently did, hanging with my friends, watching the game, flirting with the boys, not a care in the world. I have some friends that I would recommend to visit here, just not for me.

Free shuttle to the stadium...extensive shot menu...good crowd of people before the game. Yeah, I'm a fan! While visiting STL, my server at Frazer's told me that I could catch a shuttle to the Cardinals game if I walked a couple blocks to Trueman's and bought a drink. A much cheaper option than the cab I took to get to the restaurant! The bartenders were super friendly and offered suggestions for other places to go around town. I wish I'd had more time to hang out there...it seemed like a really fun place. I'd definitely go back if I had the opportunity!

I live around the corner, so I feel partial because we go there so much. Great casual bar; I've seen people there in sweatpants, but it's not a dive. Very big menu, which I appreciate. I really like their food, and I've tried almost everything. Love the potato skins, and pretzel bites. Love the outside patio, and they have great TV's for watching games. Only complaint is one of their DJ's; he kind of awful and not very good.

Great little dive bar. Wish it was walking distance from home. As long as there isn't league play, they let you play volleyball in the court out back. Really good drink specials too!!! I think the last Saturday we were there, they had a special for a bucket (6 beers) and 4 bombs for $20. Good deal!

Due to some serious storm damage, we almost lost Trueman's. In fact, it was closed for a long time, repairing itself. But now, it's open again, back stronger than ever. At its heart, Trueman's is a traditional Soulard venue; when you enter you can imagine workers from the turn-of-the-century entering this place, ready to quench their thirst and hunger with some of Trueman's hot, energy-restoring food. In fact, this tradition is probably how Trueman's got its name: True food for true people. The lunch rush at Trueman's is pretty substantial, but that's just a testament to how hearty and tasty their food it. Any standard American lunch fare is served here: salads, burgers, sandwiches, French fries, and all of that is tasty, but it's the ambience that brings people back to Trueman's, the history, the feeling. Trueman's place is also open for dinner and cocktails nightly.

I had never even heard of Trueman's Place before a week ago. I went there on a whim with a friends for a Blues-Kings playoff hockey game. The place was packed and I could tell why. Even though the place was almost standing room only, you had a great view of a flat-screen TV, the staff was punctual and friendly and the food was pretty damn good for bar food. I had the Thai flavored wings and they were amazing.

Really cool place to grab a drink and eat a meal. Their food is bar food so keep that in mind, but it is really really good bar food. The prices are reasonable. There is plenty of room and I haven't had trouble finding a seat. If you are a smoker (which I am not) they have a large covered patio n the rear so you can smoke without having to brave the elements. There are several large TVs to watch the sporting event(s) of your choice. They also have a pay juke box to play the music of your choice. I've had really good service and really poor service, but the good service trips have outweighed the bad. They also have a free shuttle to the sporting events and although it is a bit of a drive to the stadiums, it comes in a reasonable amount of time. Speaking of the shuttle, Marvin (the driver) does accept tips and are generally deserved for a free trip to the game, however he is not overly friendly. It would also be nice to not have to deal with the VERY loud rap music on the drive. Parking can be a pain as you need to find a spot on the street . Overall I really like the place and I don't know how to explain it (maybe the attractive female waitresses/bartenders or the bikini contests in the summer-which I have never attended), but the bar seems to be very geared toward men

LOVE Truemans!!! No matter what night your there your guaranteed to have a great time and since the remodel the place looks amazing! They have a great outside patio and sand volleyball in the summer and who doesn't love a free shuttle to any cards, rams or blues game! And everything I've tried to eat is delicious!! Is defiantly a Soulard must!!! :)and ladies night every Thursday and its only $5!! :)

I've been here a few times in the last month or so, because my wife joined a sand volleyball team that plays in their back lot. The bar itself is nothing special. Mediocre beer selection, fairly dirty and dingy. Service is adequate. But for a bar and grill, I've found the food that I've tried -- burgers, sandwiches, chicken strips -- to be better than average. I wouldn't go out of my way to hang out here, that's for sure, but I can't complain about the food. I go here with a pretty large group, and everyone I go with has more or less shared my opinion on their offerings.

I like their patio - it's a great spot to bring your dog on a cool night. You can watch volleyball up close and personal. We had great service when we sat at the bar and outside - plus cheap drinks!

Ha Ha! Trueman's Place. I had completely forgotten that I had ever even been there until last week. I came across a Trueman's Tee- shirt while unpacking after my move to DC. My memory is a little hazy and not just because it was over a year ago. The bartender had a huge rolodex of shots that she insisted we choose from..... repeatedly. I was happy to oblige, because I am not a fan of Budwiser in any form. (sorry, St. Louis....just can't do it). Drank a lot of shots, played some darts, and had an okay time. Truemans is a 3 star dive bar. The kind of place locals are attached to, but out of towners like me , lacking in neighborhood or sentimental attachment, just find average. The bartender was friendly, so friendly that we couldn't tell if she was hitting on me, the guy that I was with, or both of us.

Bar food. Greasy, mostly fried and lacking in quality is the only way I can think to describe it. It's not our favorite, and we usually avoid it at all costs. I mean, most people go to bars to drink, not eat. So imagine our surprise when we discovered a local bar that serves up food as good as it's beer! Truemans Place, located in the Soulard/Benton Park neighborhood has a great selection of sandwiches, salads, burgers, dinner plates and appetizers that are surprisingly delicious and satisfying. It's a pretty decent sized menu for a bar, and it's a great place to stop by for lunch or carry-out. The also have pizza... but I'll get to that later. My favorite sandwich is the Chicken Parmesan, a generous sized chicken breast that is battered, fried and topped with provolone cheese and marinara sauce. It always comes out perfectly cooked, hot and melty and not as greasy as you would expect for being fried. The Captain always orders the Buffalo Chicken Wrap, a nice mix of buffalo strips, tomatoes, cheese and ranch dressing. Very large and filling, it's his favorite item on the menu. I've tried it a few times, and it's super tasty. For the vegetarians, they offer up many alternatives that you wouldn't expect to find on a bar menu. There are appetizers, salads and a veggie club/wrap to choose from. I've had a few salads and the veggie wrap and all were very yummy and serve up hearty portions. The appetizer section of the menu is my favorite. They have over 20 different items to try, and I'm not talking about just a bowl of peanuts! Toasted ravioli, pretzel bites, fried green beans and mini tacos are just a few of the many quick bites they have to offer. Our particular favorite are the hot wings, served smoking hot and spicy. There's nothing better than wings and an ice cold beer! The atmosphere at Truemans is like any sports bar I've ever been too, so nothing too out of the ordinary. They do have a pretty cool beach volleyball court in the back of the bar and they have league volleyball during the warmer months. It's always a fun time sitting out on the patio area watching the games. The place can get a bit loud and rowdy on a Friday or Saturday night and usually draws a younger crowd. So, if you just want to eat I would recommend coming for lunch or ordering to go. Service is pretty good and all of the girls are friendly. They have a full bar, so drinks are never a problem. The best thing about the food is how inexpensive it is, so the only thing that will break your wallet at Truemans is your beer consumption. The only thing I don't like about Truemans? Well, sadly it's the pizza. The only way I'll eat it is if I'm really drunk, and it's doesn't even have Provel on it! The crust is wafer thin and barely has toppings on it. They only good thing about it is that it's cheap, but I can honestly say I would rather have a Tombstone frozen pizza than eat this stuff. Bad pizza aside, Truemans Place delivers when it comes to their food. Almost everything we have tried so far has been delicious and satisfying. It's a great place to meet up with friends for lunch or an early dinner, and if you feel like sticking around for a few drinks it's a fun place to hang out and relax. So raise your glasses and toast to good eats...and drinks! Eating STL, A Chicago Perspective eatingstl.blogspot.com

Trueman's is your average bar in every way. The food is average, the service is average, the prices are average. The place isn't bad, but it's not particularly good either. I work nearby and if someone suggests there, I go, but no one usually does. There used to be a group of guys that I worked with that would suggest going there, but they don't any more, so maybe the place has changed. It still seems the same as it has always been to me... average.

truemans has the healthiest bar food menu in soulard. even the fried food is not greasy. we usually order a bucket ($14), a pound of the best hot chicken wings in st. louis, and a thin crust pizza (they use eovaldi's pizza sauce and fresh ingredients). with great music coming from the jukebox and outdoor flat screens makes this a prime sports bar. all this built into a historic st. louis brick building on the upper banks of highway 55. volleyball rules the evening nights and saturdays is like a beach party. they are cool with dogs on the patio and the waitresses are hot, but not all over you like hot shots.

After reading all the reviews I've seen about this place, and living around the corner, I was excited to check it out. Much to my surprise, it was nothing like I expected. It had a "county" bar feel in an old historic neighborhood. Carpet on the floors? It just didn't seem right for the Benton Park neighborhood. Okay, so I can get over that as I grew up in the county and should be used to that. What I can't get over is that I was there with my significant other, we ordered two beers, and that's all we got! I mean really, that's all we got. After I finished my beer, I watched the 2 different waitresses pass by our table (table was on the corner and very visible) at least 15 times without ever asking if we wanted another round. We waited about 8-10 minutes then paid our tab and left. I was really disappointed. I know they have to pay attention to the regulars, however, if we had gotten even a fraction of attention, we might have become regulars.

Let me preface this review by saying that Trueman's has the BEST...yes BEST Chicken Parmesan Sandwich I have ever had. I have been to Trueman's before; but the last time I went it was during Mardi Gras and of course I don't remember much of that night. The bar was crowded and it was cold! I do remember the beer being good and the service was fine. Now back to this review-I was invited to Trueman's to watch the Cards game with some friends. When I arrived I met my friends on the back patio where they saved me a seat. The server, Tara, came over and before I had time to think about what to drink she offered me a beer; so of course I said yes! I mean who turns down a beer? It was Mug Night and so I filled my Mug for $4....it was fabulous. When I was faced with the decision of what to order (I had not eaten all day) I didn't even have to look at the menu because I was quickly prompted to get the chick parm....and so I did. Great choice. It was cooked and seasoned perfectly. Just thinking about it is making me hungry. Of course the side order of fries was a perfect choice. I will try this again. Watching the game in this atmosphere was fabulous! I love being with a crowd of people! After the game we decided to move the party inside for some darts. I myself am not a dart player, but watching was just as fun. Another mug was ordered and the dart competition began. What was so great is that our server was on a team and made it to throw when it was her turn! She is great! I highly recommend this place if you have not gone. Food was good, service was good, and I will be back!
